Netbooks are for viewing, notebooks are for doing! says PC World
• Size, features and style count when on the move
“When netbooks were introduced last year, many people thought they were going to be a cheap and cheerful replacement for the laptop, but we have always positioned them as an additional mobile device – compatible with laptops and PCs”, says Jeremy Fennell, Category Director at PC World, “and according to our customers we were right.”
“More than ever, customers are interested in getting value for money, but simply buying the cheapest model around does not provide them with all that they want from their netbook. Our biggest selling models retail at around £300.00.
“Customers want a decent, usable screen size and keyboard, and a software system they are familiar with, but style and design are important too. This is because they are mobile and seen out and about, netbooks make a statement about the user and colourful models are growing in popularity. One of the most popular colours currently is red.
“The screen size is important as customers want to be able to view pages easily, but the netbook also needs to be small enough to fit in a handbag. The 10inch models fit the bill perfectly.
“Equally the keyboard needs to be big enough to be usable and battery life is increasingly important as netbooks are used on the move, with new technology affording upwards of 5-6 hours.
“Despite initial hype that netbooks would move more users onto the Linux platform, Microsoft has emerged as the preferred operating system because Windows makes it easier to share content, and provides customers with a simpler, more familiar computing experience on the move.
He adds; “Based on this insight, all the netbooks in our stores will feature Microsoft Windows, larger screens and keyboards, and greater colour choices to satisfy customers demand for performance, design and familiarity.”
When Windows 7 is released it will make netbooks even more useful for customers through new features that help customers network their netbooks with other PCs to instantly share photos, movies, music and files, to take away, view and edit on the move.
PC World will continue to offer a larger netbook range online, which will cover Linux and smaller screen options for those customers who require these specifications.
